Creating a new bedroom for any child can sometimes work out to be very expensive especially when you theme the entire room. It can then be a little disheartening months later when they have gone off their favourite character you included in the room!
It does not always have to work out expensive, you just need to be creative and think about how you can design the room so that it evolves over time and can be changed as and when the child is bored with the look or even grown out of it.
The key to designing is to introduce flexible and accessible storage, colour and a couple of features that will evolve as your child grows.
Instead of branded wallpaper, branded fixed lights, branded furniture etc. go neutral and use accessories to theme the room as these can simply be changed when a room refresh is required. Investing into a decent bed and furniture that will work for both a small child and as they grow is important.
Incorporate shelving that can be used for books and toys. In small spaces raise the bed height and utilise underneath for storage and/or play.
Select wall colours that are timeless such as grey as these can work with many other colours when accessories are added to the theme. You should also look to mix and match accessories to soften the room. A graphical vinyl on a wall or items hanging from the ceiling can create drama.
Create spaces in the room that can be used as dens to hide, play, read or have fun in. Use lampshades instead of fitted lighting as these can be changed easily without the need of an electrician.
Imaginative play can help bring a sense of fun and fantasy to a child’s bedroom. For example role play toys, mini kitchens and shops all in easily reach so children can spontaneously decide when to use them.
