Choosing the correct wine glass can include a whole host of factors from simply personal preference to the type of wine. Today we want to boil it down to two easy to understand steps to help you quickly choose the correct glass to maximise your experience.
1) Stem Or No Stem?
A stemmed wine glass is the classical way to drink a glass of wine. The stem can be important because the way you hold the glass can impact the wines temperature, especially on warmer days.
Holding the glass by the stem rather than the bowl stops the temperature in the wine glass rise. If you enjoy a chilled wine with fruity flavours like a Pinot Grigio or a Sauvignon Blanc or rosé then a stemmed glass will fit you perfectly.
On the other end of the spectrum, a darker red wine that is served best slightly warmer so a stemless glass may be preferable.
2) Bowl Shape
The bowl shape of a wine glass impacts the flavours and aromas of the wine.
A smaller bowl will suit better for a white wine because it will help trap the aromas within the glass. As you drink a smaller bowl allows the glass to be closer to your nose, allowing you to enjoy the aromas of the wine more.
A larger bowl fits a red wine with more intense flavours and aromas. Allowing more air into the wine glass helps more oxygen reach the wine which will release the flavours and aromas inside.
Sparkly wines better suit a thinner, fluted glass because it keeps the bubbles within the glass.
